The solar eclipse marks the beginning of this show, occurring here, in New York City, on October 14th at 12:08 PM. Once a year, in its slow solemn dance, the moon glides its silvery form in front of the fiery Sun. For a few brief moments, our sweet, cool moon becomes the real star of the galaxy, using its choreography to block out the radiance of a most worshiped celestial entity. The moon’s yearly ritual confounded humans before we could understand what was happening: was it an ominous omen, a spiritual sign? Now, with greater knowledge of the movements of the solar system, we can look in awe at this ritual where something as (comparatively) small as the moon can block out the sun which is 400 times larger. Such power! Such hubris! All from a dance.
In watching the moon’s performance, we have created our own rituals. Ritual can be defined in a spiritual and magical sense. It can take the form of something theatrical, solemn, or even a little cartoony. But ritual can also appear in the mundane habits of everyday life, like how we start each morning, or in superstitions that come up around competitive games and athletics. There is also the act of making artwork which can be ritualist in the process, be it meditative and repetitive or ecstatic and intuitive. These nine artists exemplify the broad ways this concept can manifest.
Paper Moon will be on view beginning Friday, October 13 through Sunday, November 12, 2023. The gallery is located at 48 Hester Street in the Lower East Side. Gallery hours are Wednesday-Sunday from 12-6pm and by appointment. For more information about this exhibition, please email info@mypetram.com.
