Santa Barbara, CA - My Pet Ram is pleased to present Landscapes & Seascapes by Robert Levine.
In his series of Landscape/Seascape paintings, Levine presents the cover art from issues of 1940s and 50’s comic books devoid of all figures, titles and symbols. Bringing their backgrounds to the foreground, he chooses to focus on their vivid colors and cinematic qualities, rather than the heroes who inhabited them. Taking inspiration from artists like Duchamp, Warhol, and Richard Prince, Levine’s paintings are a meta-act, in which he treats POP Art as yet another quotidian object for that of its own lens. The piers, parks, oceans, and cityscapes that Levine paints are devoid of life, perhaps hinting at the movement itself. At the same time, the luscious oils and slick surfaces pay homage to the ‘commercial artists’ whose earnest work was a causality of a movement that deemed it second-tier. The lack of a superhero leaves just the artwork which propped them up, and the artists which brought them to life.
Landscapes & Seascapes opens on Friday, September 16th and closes on Sunday, October 17, 2022. The gallery, which is steps from Cabrillo Boulevard at 16 Helena Avenue, will be open Thursday through Sunday from 12-7 pm.
