New York, NY - My Pet Ram is pleased to present Inside the Outside World curated by Matthew F Fisher, and featuring work by Maria Calandra, Dave Choi, Erik den Breejen, Andrew Gordon, Michele Hemsoth, Rob Matthews, Mónica Palma, Giordanne Salley, and Yves Tessier.
Leave the house.
It's too hot.
It's too cold.
Spring has sprung.
The snow has melted.
Look at those clouds.
Those clouds are trouble.
It's raining.
Better off staying in bed.
Haven't seen the sun in days.
Here comes the sun.
It's perfect outside.
Not a cloud in the sky.
Red sky.
Red dawn.
The sun set early today.
New moon.
Old moon.
Pink moon.
Return home.
Inside the Outside World brings together nine artists whose work is centered on our interaction between points. Michele Hemsoth, Erik den Breejen, and Rob Matthews imagery weave background and foreground into one plane while Andrew Gordon's tranquil image of an open industrial window reminds us how often we are separated from the beauty we admire. Maria Calandra pulls from her endless nature walks to capture moments frozen in paint, creating a stillness and longing. David Choi's found tree sculptures, with narrative and figuration carved into them, remind us of all that we can't see when we look outside. Mónica Palma and Yves Tessier bring the everyday indoors: Palma's subway performance with her drawings document time and place physically, and Tessier's observation drawings of pedestrians show us how close and far we are from each other. Giordanne Salley's oil painting of water and hands reflecting is a moment when we were one and alone in the world around us, if only for a second.
Inside the Outside World will be on view Friday, June 2 through Sunday, June 25, 2023. The gallery is located at 48 Hester Street in the Lower East Side. Gallery hours are Wednesday-Sunday from 12-6pm. For more information about this exhibition, please email info@mypetram.com.
